UV-C (Ultraviolet Light C) has been used to sanitize for over 70 years. The 1903 Niels Finsen received the Nobel Prize in Medicine for using UV light to fight tuberculosis. In today’s modern world, robotic UV-C Light is commonly used to sterilize operating rooms, medical equipment, and many other biologically tainted items. UV-C devices are now successfully used to sterilize reusable PPE in many hospitals nationwide.
Sunlight as a treatment, was used during the Spanish Flu (1918–1919) pandemic, a combination of sunlight, fresh air, strict standards of hygiene, and reusable face masks appears to have substantially reduced deaths among some patients and infections among medical staff.
While UV light in “tremendous amounts” damages the body, light in the Red and NIR (Near Infrared) spectrum is very healing and can penetrate deeply into organs and bones. Red light reduces viral load and replication rates, reduces inflammatory cytokines, enhances neutrophil and macrophage function, and improves lung function in patients with acute lung injury.
Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy before and during an upper respiratory infection can enhance the body’s ability to fight the disease and mitigate symptoms. It may seem implausible that one treatment can elicit so many different positive effects on the body, but it all stems from one critical mechanism of action – increasing adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Near-Infrared light enters the cell and is absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase and cellular water. This process reduces the oxidative stress in the cell. The cell is then able to produce more adenosine triphosphate (ATP). This increase enhances the ability to fight disease and hastens the healing process.
Cells make up Every system in the body. Inside each cell is a mitochondrion. The mitochondria synthesize the energy that powers the cells. Oxidative stress slows down the energy production line. When cells become exposed to Red and Near-Infrared light, the cell kicks the oxidative stress back into the bloodstream and allows the cells to make energy more efficiently and do their unique job more effectively.
